Louise Hanson-Dyer, 1884-1962
Louise Hanson-Dyer was an Australian patron of the arts who founded the L'Oiseau Lyre music publishing and recording company. The label concentrated upon early music recordings at a time when few record companies were interested in that repertoire. A philanthropist and socialite, she had a large influence on the musical life of Melbourne, assisting in the establishment of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She
also arranged performances of early music, in particular of the French baroque, at a time when it was little known in Australia and elsewhere. The Editions de l'Oiseau-Lyre of Monaco, now Lyrebird Press, has been relocated to the University of Melbourne.
